Life for Hoosiers has only gotten worse since the Republican supermajority took control. The cost of living has risen, voting rights have been restricted, more minorities are under attack, public education has been hollowed out, and college graduates continue to leave. From Kentland to Covington and from Lafayette to State Line City, District 13 includes many towns such as Fowler, Wingate, Otterbein, Attica, Remington, Veedersburg, and Williamsport. It includes southern and northern Tippecanoe County, all of Benton and Warren counties, and portions of Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton and White counties.

So many Hoosiers don't have a voice in the Statehouse, and it's not their fault. The Democratic Party has abandoned rural Indiana allowing Republicans to have free reign. It's time for a grassroots effort by working class Hoosiers who are tired of the two-party system and are ready to start building something else.

I think a lot about how people are being harmed all over the world, from genocides, to capitalist exploitation of labor, and from the US Empire’s endless bloodlust.But these thoughts often come back to “How can I decrease this human harm that I see? What power do I have? Where can I make a difference?” It’s hard to figure out some action to take for Palestinians, Sudanese, or any number of others seen in the news, so then I think about who is being harmed the most close to me and in my state. And that always takes me back to prisons in my own state.I have spent a few times in the past several months reviewing this data from the Indiana Department of Corrections and it is hard to read. As of the November 2025 data, there were 27,198 people incarcerated in Indiana. We all know the horrors prisons are, from unaccountable guards, to slave labor, to nearly no healthcare, to impossible commissary pricing, the continued use of solitary confinement (which is psychological torture), and so many more terrible things.So many of our neighbors are silently suffering in a system we allow to exist, thrive, and expand. The prison population in Indiana continues to grow each month to the tune of 15% in the last three years (23,177 in January 2024 to 26,659 on December 1, 2025 according to another section of the report - not all totals match throughout sadly).I added up all people who are in for drug-related crimes, either dealing or possession. That number is 5,409. That’s 20%. One-fifth of everyone in Indiana prisons is there because of the “War on Drugs.” Our laws, our government, our system is punishing thousands of our neighbors for victimless crimes. We are spending our tax dollars to create harm to people for their choice of bodily autonomy.There are certainly other classes of crimes in this document that are also infuriating that I didn’t cover today, but don’t forget that there are thousands of people in our state who are being severely oppressed within its borders, in cages, and behind barbed wire. We are rightly outraged at the escalation by ICE and CBP, but we should also be outraged on behalf of thousands of others already trapped in the prison industrial complex.<a href="https://www.in.gov/idoc/files/policy-and-procedure/statistical-data/offender-population-statistical-reports/2025/Offender-Population-Statistical-Report-Novemb.pdf">https://www.in.gov/idoc/files/policy-and-procedure/statistical-data/offender-population-statistical-reports/2025/Offender-Population-Statistical-Report-Novemb.pdf</a>

Indiana's prisons are hellish nightmares. Many of those incarcerated should be set free and real systems of reform such as restorative justice need to be developed and implemented. 20% of Indiana's 27,000 prison population are in for drug charges - shameful!

Close prisons

Abolish ICE. Do not cooperate with these federal thugs with state resources. Prosecute all of them that break state law. Protect, value, and celebrate immigrants. Welcome refugees.

Immigration

Police should be more accountable to their actions than the general public due to the power they have, not less. They shouldn't be able to get away with murder.

End qualified immunity

Every human deserves health care. Many countries already have this. It's embarrassing that we don't. Let's fix it.

From policing thought, peaceful protests, and minority existence, to criminalizing drug use, existing in public spaces, and failing the Game of Capitalism, government needs to stop causing needless harm.

End government oppression

We must build out renewables and retire fossil coal and gas plants as quickly as possible to avoid the most harmful impacts of climate change. Benton County is a model to follow!

Green New Deal

Teachers should make double what they do. Start at $48k and average $60k? That's insulting. Private and charter schools must stop stealing funds from public school since wealthy families don't need the help. The supermajority touting a budget surplus is even more insulting. Give that to teachers!

Fully fund public education

The working class makes the economy run. Businesses and their owners don't do us any favors by stealing most of the value we create. We need to take it back.

Income equality

Every human deserves to have a place to call home, to keep their belongings safe, and to rest and recover. We choose to make housing unaffordable and unavailable. We can make a different choice.

Housing is a human right

Working class issues are hardly heard in the Indiana State House because only bills that Republicans are in favor of ever get a shot. We need more diversity in the legislature to fight for working class Hoosiers.
